Position description: I’m looking for multiple computer science PhD students for Fall 2023 to join my AI lab. There is no application fee for the University of Rochester. The main projects involve lifelong machine learning, medical computer vision (computational pathology), self-supervised learning, and bias robustness in neural networks. We also have some projects involving brain inspired alternatives to backpropagation and involving computational models of memory consolidation during sleep.

Students should have strong coding skills, skills in deep learning, PyTorch (or another toolbox, but PyTorch is used exclusively in the lab), linear algebra, and preferably a peer reviewed publication that demonstrates their ability to conduct research in deep learning, especially conferences/journals well known in machine learning. If you don’t have publications (even preprints are useful), ranking high in machine learning competitions (Kaggle and the like) or significant industry experience conducting AI R&D counts highly as well. Students need to be interested in the same problems as my group and have strong written and oral communication skills in English.

If you think you are a good fit then I encourage you to apply, and please mention that you are interested in working in my group in your application essay and why you think you would be a good fit. Here is the application link: https://www.cs.rochester.edu/graduate/how-to-apply.html

The application deadline is December 15. After applications are screened by the admissions committee, a subset of the students interested in working with me will be interviewed in early 2023.
